November, 5pm

I should have brought a jacket,
reading over our texts
in a strip mall parking lot.
Sirens
sound in the distance as daylight
leaves me quickly;
the wind smacks a flag against its pole
and chases birds from a telephone wire.
The heavy clouds move
only when I’m looking—the sky disappears
before I see their progress.
I watch the flag get lowered now,
I think it’s over.
