Fingering the wheel again
cradling the glass
stark sun into the den
it passed when we were talking

nothings the trouble with starting on fire
I’ve decided to hate books

I hate what I miss
becoming obsessive about the next thing I find beautiful.

Nobody’s Different

I waited
and waited
and waited for you
to text me after
our little makeout session
in the backseat of the taxi.
You haven’t still.
I guess I should have listened
more carefully when you talked
about all your drunken mistakes
each Monday.

Pathetic Fallacy Once Again

The Earth shifts closer to the sun,
the corona gripping us tighter than ever, always
too soon.

Death is a multitasker and it’s killed
my dormant winter, the infatuation,
my girlfriend too. I can only escape the weather;
I hurry inside to wonder

when déjà vu will work,
when will it stop me,
keep me from doing it again.

Then I wonder if the sun is the same.
Facing the approaching Earth with the cold
apathy of experience, not quite remembering when
and dismissing it all the same;
yet, then, looking out later over the wide ecliptic
and missing it all the same.

A sentimentalist thinks things will last, a romantic hopes against hope that they won’t.
-F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise

My earliest memory of this girl is sitting at the table
at work, meeting her eyes, asking what music she likes.
She responded politely.
We got out late –
I looked over at a red light,
her phone was in her glasses.

Last night I was at an intersection
and I felt where I was.
All those nights watching her
watch the clock, wanting to be the time.
I glanced over at the car next to me
before I drove off.

This is how to invoke a history
you may or may not have had.
The Police make me miss my Mom’s past.
The cliffed coast shows a Greek nostalgia.
Watching baseball and longing for the ’40s.

And the unrequited love is like
finally hitting a home run
– 46 years old, in an empty stadium –
and wishing at least your buried Dad could watch
you run the bases under the lights
